Localize your website into Norwegian

Reach roughly 5.5 million Norwegians in one of the world's wealthiest, most digitally advanced economies. Norway is genuinely unusual: it has two legally equal written standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk, and most commercial content only needs one of them. MotaWord defaults to Bokmål for standard commercial projects and flags when Nynorsk is worth the investment.

Bokmål and Nynorsk: two official ways to write the same language

Norwegians speak their local dialect, not either written form directly. Which written standard to use is a real, ongoing decision in Norway, not a settled default.

Bokmål
Closer to Danish, dominant in cities including Oslo, and used by 85 to 90% of the population. The right default for most commercial content.
Nynorsk
Built from rural dialects as a deliberate alternative to Danish influence, used by 10 to 15% of the population, mainly in western Norway. Public bodies are legally required to provide at least 25% of written material in Nynorsk.

Cultural and linguistic considerations

Norwegian localization mistakes usually come from picking the wrong written standard or assuming full interchangeability with Danish or Swedish.

Bokmål is the safe commercial default

It covers the large majority of the population and is standard for most brand and e-commerce content. Nynorsk becomes relevant mainly for public-sector, government, or western Norway-specific projects.

check

Norwegian sits in the middle of Nordic mutual intelligibility

Norwegians generally understand both Danish and Swedish better than Danes and Swedes understand each other, but that doesn't make reused Danish or Swedish content acceptable for a Norwegian audience.

check

Understated tone and high English fluency

Similar to Denmark and Sweden, Norwegian communication culture favors directness over hype, and most Norwegians are fluent in English, so localization is mainly about trust and conversion.

What Norwegian localization does for search and reach

Standard SEO tooling applies, with the written-standard decision as the main strategic consideration.

Hreflang

nb-NO for Bokm?l and nn-NO for Nynorsk are both valid tags, letting you serve the right version if you build both.

Keyword research by standard

Bokm?l and Nynorsk searches can use different spellings for the same concept, worth accounting for if you build Nynorsk content.

Google is the standard search engine

No special search engine considerations; standard technical SEO and Search Console practices apply directly.

Translating and localizing a website into Norwegian

Bokmål for almost all commercial content. Nynorsk is worth considering for public-sector work or if your audience is concentrated in western Norway.

Not recommended, despite the mutual intelligibility. Norwegian has its own vocabulary and spelling conventions that a reused translation will miss.

Cost is driven by word count and file format. MotaWord quotes per word with no subscription or platform fee, and turnaround is typically 12 to 24 hours.
